Preamplifiers are the heart of every quality stereo system. They are required for every system with more than one input, and typically control input selection, volume, and often include additional features.
Phono preamplifiers are needed to amplify the extremely low-voltage output by a phono cartridge (thousandths of a volt) up to the levels needed to feed preamps and amplifiers.
Power Amplifiers exist to provide sufficient electrical power to drive your chosen speakers as musically as possible. Different speaker types can require significantly different amplification capabilities. You’ll need either one stereo amplifier or two monoblock amplifiers for a pair of speakers.
